My name is Mpho Majoro. I am a lover of words, life and people. I am a storyteller, writer, editor, creative and journalist. My career in the media began in 1997 at Rhodes University where I had enrolled for a Bachelor of Journalism degree. I hold a BA Honours in Journalism and Media Studies. Upon graduation, I joined Channel Africa, an international radio station under the auspices of the South African Broadcasting Corporation. I served as the newsroom intern, learning about journalism and finally applying all the theories I had learnt at university. When my internship ended, I joined SABCnews.com as a junior writer. At the time, online or digital journalism was not very popular. I thus proudly count myself among those who worked in this space when it was deemed unimportant and was largely ignored by many media houses. During those times, online journalists not only produced content, but we also learnt how to do HTML coding, used pictures and videos as storytelling tools and set the foundation really for the generation that uses 140 characters. Two years later, I moved to Business Day to work with their fledging online team as a writer. That’s where I honed my skills in online journalism and was promoted to Online Editor a few months later. The four years spent at BDFM opened my eyes to the world of financial journalism. It was during my time there that I learnt about this niche medium. I was exposed to exciting world of finance, economics, business and trading. The urge to know more, however, and the desire to grow as a journalist nudged me towards Reuters, an International News agency where I continued to work in the online space. I learnt how international media operates and how to work in a competitive global platform. After two years at the news agency, there was an opportunity to work in television – my first love. I love moving pictures, making them meaningful by adding words and the rush of live TV. I then joined ENCA as a senior sub editor. I’ve spent the last five years learning everything about television production. My specialty is scriptwriting and visual storytelling. I am also a freelance writer and editor. I love arranging words into colourful collages and stories. I especially love telling African stories and narratives about women, gender and culture. In 2019,I joined Newzroom Afrika as founding Output Editor. I was instrumental in setting up the newsroom and ensuring that it was launched successfully.
