Most of my 20-year professional life has been in South Africa’s highly competitive and dynamic media landscape. I’ve worked as Art Director and Senior Designer in the art departments of some of South Africa’s most high-profile and successful newspaper and magazine publications, not only in print (desk top publishing), but also on digital platforms as online content. My primary tasks were creative and included conceptualizing the look and feel of several titles, planning and designing special magazine issues. This also involved careful picture editing, meticulous specialist photoshopping/retouching, managing the art process and mentoring and developing younger designers. My more senior roles also required management skills, reporting up the company hierarchy to management levels and organising and motivating the more junior team members who worked under my leadership. I have also worked in Corporate Communications, designing small companies’ visual brand language and corporate identities. I am a highly creative individual, with extensive experience in conceptualizing and designing media content, both in hard news and lifestyle magazines. I’ve also conceptualized and directed photo shoots, including magazine cover shoots. My job also involved writing management reports. I’ve frequently written lifestyle magazine articles, especially in the travel and motoring sections of these titles. I’m proficient in brand design, corporate identities and visual language of companies, although most of these have been small and medium size enterprises. I’m hardworking, curious, innovative and a problem-solver.
