I believe my past experiences of working within the student assistance environment have sufficiently prepared me to be competent in performing the duties of a job of such a nature. I am a calm, friendly and hardworking team player who has been, for the past 3 years, provided excellent assistance to students and colleagues alike. My most recent appointment has been that of a marker for the department of Industrial Psychology, this entails the responsibility of marking semester tests for all first, second, and third year Industrial psychology modules. The responsibility of reporting back to the lecturers also forms part of my duties as well as availing myself for student enquiries regarding the mark allocations or marking of an individual test together with the lecturer. The environment within the department of Industrial Psychology has been one of intensive growth for me during the past 8 months. This is mainly due to the different temperaments and personalities of the lecturers I have to report to who are in charge of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year levels. They all have separate working styles and one often has to adapt in order to effectively communicate and work harmoniously towards a common goal with them this includes anything from discussing the . This appointment has improved my analytical and logical skills as this job has requires one to provide accurate statistics and liaise with fellow students and lecturers regarding some of the most pressing issues students face. The January – February registrations for the academic year of 2019 also provided me with another appointment within the environment of student assistance, as an EduTech Buddy. During this period, I was responsible for being at the registration hall for a predetermined amount of time to introduce the E-Learning platform (Blackboard) that the University makes use of to first year students at the QwaQwa campus. After introducing the platform, I would then be tasked with registering the students for various training sessions that took place within the computer lab during the day whilst registrations were running. Within the lab, I would then facilitate the training session with a colleague where students received valuable training in their abilities to access, navigate, and work through Blackboard. We were tasked with ensuring that every first year student be able to access, navigate, complete quizzes, find their marks on Blackboard preferably before registration ended and classes began. Most of my communication, time management, presentation, and facilitation and people skills were acquired and polished during my first appointment as an A-STEPeer (Tutor) in 2017 at the Centre for Teaching and Learning. My duties included hosting tutorial sessions for the modules of Industrial Psychology at first year level at the QwaQwa campus, as well as grading the completed and submitted online activities. This appointment was discontinued in 2018 because of a lack of resources in the form of computer labs therefore students could not complete their online activities on time. I was then appointed as a face-to-face tutor with the same objectives as the online tutoring gig; facilitating the understanding of assignment instructions by students, guiding them through the steps and ensuring a cohesive and inclusive learning environment. The growth I achieved through this appointment has been tremendous, the past three years have taught me how to work well within a team as well as within a diverse group of people with different multilingual preferences. Calmness, humility, a sense of being down-to-earth and an incredible work ethic are some of the characteristics I have managed to cultivate within myself. I am also knowledgeable as to how to navigate a diverse environment and deal with different types of personalities. With this, I hope that I may be awarded further, an opportunity to cultivate and expand my resources within the university’s rich and diverse work environment.
