An ambulance and emergency care worker are the first medical workers in-charge of injured personnel during accidents. They provide first aid assistance to the injured wherein their goal is to stabilize the person before transferring them to the hospital for further medical care. Their job often requires them to quickly decide on the best method to stabilize the person and provide immediately medical relief during emergencies.

The typical day of an ambulance and emergency care worker is often on preparation. They are always on stand-by especially when they are working in a big city where accidents can happen anytime. They also work with the latest communication devices to immediately connect to the right people for additional medical assistance. An emergency care worker is usually a nurse specially trained for medical emergencies so their work often involves caring for patients and preparing them for further medical aid on site.

Training and education requirements?

A nursing degree is the best way to land this type of job. Nurses are usually trained for different types of jobs at the hospital and one of those responsibilities is to man the ambulance. Aside from a nursing degree, additional training specific to first aid and emergency response are also required. There are also associate degrees for first aid but they are mostly on limited responsibilities and they often work with nurses as their assistants.

Hospitals employ emergency care workers and this is a requirement for every medical institution. The number of emergency care workers is very small in every hospital which means competition for this position is fierce. But aside from hospitals, there are small emergency response companies that employ emergency care workers.

Because an emergency care worker will require an ambulance to function, independent or freelance work is not possible in this type of job.
