JOB PURPOSE
The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) is heavily involved in setting the strategic focus for the investment direction of the organization and its portfolio investee companies, as well as in capital raising for investing activities from clients and investors.
• He/she leads the investment management team in establishing and implementing strategies and processes to ensure superior return is achieved on all investment portfolios managed by Invequity.
• Provides strategic insight and direction to the business as relates to investment decisioning; and leads investments, completes all fund transactions, and effectively maintains portfolio development.
• Professionalises the strategy of the Funds under management and devises on appropriate investments.
• Implements and delivers the approved investment strategy of clients committed capital into qualifying entities.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• Minimum of a Post Graduate degree with a Major in investment management, or related field.
• Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) Charter Holder will be a plus.
• Master of Business Administration (MBA) and/or Chartered Accountant (CA) a distinct advantage
• 8 years specific investment experience within the investment management industry.
• A proven track record of successful investment management and decision making with knowledge of portfolio management.
• Understanding and proficiency in asset allocation and equity investments.
• Knowledge of major types of investments and markets.
• In depth experience/knowledge of South African investment market.
• Understanding of investment risks.
• Strong understanding of valuation, accounting, and economic principles across most industries.
• Building and leading an investment team of various disciplines in the investment process
• Understanding of the B-BBEE codes will be a strong plus.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Key performance areas of the CIO include:
• Identify potential strategic investment trends and opportunities and lead the investment strategy of the company
• Takes a strategic leadership role in decision making on investments
• Make sound recommendations about where to invest funds and make changes according to market conditions and investment strategies.
• Write clear and well-informed investment recommendations based on thorough research and analysis.
• Briefs members of the Investment committee/Advisory Board and the Board of Members on proposed acquisitions and relevant matters
• Effectively engage with the Investment Committee and with several independent professionals,
• Lead and coordinate capital-raising through client/partner/investor roadshows/meetings, and any relevant events relationship management, high-profile identifies strategic /public forums presentations and other activities.
• Oversees/participate in closing of transactions.
• Oversee and manage Invequity’s investment portfolio, including quality control and investment approach,
• Ensure professional portfolio management
• Research including high level due diligence and valuations.
• Professionally lead underwriting and due diligence activities
• Conduct technical and effective financial modelling
• Develop a relevant IT strategy for the division.
• Ensure professional and effective execution of approved deals
• Establish efficient and well-organized investment processes
• Conduct or oversee analysis of investment portfolios.
• Negotiating and structuring investment projects on the targeted entities
• Organize /develop regular investment reports and reviews, including quantitative and qualitative portfolio studies.
• Ongoing assessment of liquidity and refinance needs
• Effectively manage asset disposal/exit
• Ensure Corporate Governance through effective internal controls and inn collaboration with Executives, Group services, CEO and COO ensure capital/financial management information systems/processes and procedures are in place and are safe
• Ensure that the Company has appropriate systems to enable it to conduct its activities both lawfully and ethically,
• Ensure that the Company maintains high standards of corporate citizenship and responsible, ethical commercial practice wherever it does business,
• Drive Investment compliance through influence, collaboration and cooperation with colleagues, various functions/departments to ensure accurate, compliant flow of investment information and data, inclusive of document handling for the achievement of ethical and effective governance
• Recommend and an influence the appropriate designations/appointments, delegations and mandates
• Recommend and ensure on time and relevant review of towards an effective Risk Management framework; and influence /inform relevant statutory/regulatory and policy compliance; and ensure appropriate personnel/ functions/departments make the necessary reviews/revisions to minimise risk through appropriate safeguards
• Demonstrate effective in people management, through collaboration and cooperation with various functions/departments to ensure accurate, compliant flow of investment information and data, inclusive of document handling for the achievement of ethical and effective governance.
• Ensure customer focus and help manage and uphold current client relationships.

DIRECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF PORTFOLIOS

• Collaborate with Executives and CEO, find, structure, develop, support and monitor portfolio investments with an increased focus on exiting investments,
• Make recommendations to the Investment Committee and make sound pitches at meetings towards the review and structuring of prospective investments, as well as report on investment progress and advise winning portfolio strategy,
• Strategically drive capital- raise activities and execute on Invequity’s next stage of capital markets/investment fund offerings towards building and growing the business,
• Collaborate with CEO and Executives to coordinate the development/strengthening of strong investment committee(s)
• Work closely with/coach individuals, colleagues, to develop their level of contribution and effectiveness to achieve winning deal structuring and post-investment management.
• Influence the development and delivery of a coherent set of post-investment management resources and infrastructure including advisors, technical specialists, governance resources and peer t networks, that will help investee companies execute on their business models and grow,
• Ensure that investment and portfolio performance is routinely assessed and that reports are prepared on a timely basis for the internal finance function and investors/relevant parties,
• Ensure that the portfolio investment process is specific, efficient and followed; and propose adjustments as necessary to investees’ management teams,
• With Business Development/Executives, develop a strategy to identify new sources of capital and play an active role with investors/donors on both capital raising and discussions around the transformation impact and performance of investments.
• Ensure adequate financial and transformation impact monitoring of underlying investment/ companies as well as compliance with appropriate regulations.
• Work with the CFO and COO to strengthen internal management within the business
• Meet with investors and prospective donors and investors to discuss the portfolio’s current and potential impact
• Work with the entire Invequity team to ensure a spirit of collaboration.
• Monitor the Invequity investment/ business approaches to maximize the transformative outcomes and build financial sustainability.
