CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
FIVE (5) YEAR FIXED TERM

Job Purpose
1 . To establish, implement, monitor and report effective, economic, and efficient operations for the whole
organization to drastically improve operations of Sci-Bono as a whole and specific departments including:
• Science Centre,
• Exhibitory,
• Career Centre,
• Learner Support, Teacher Support,
• ICT,
• Research and Development,
• Marketing, Communications and Events,
• Supply Chain Management,
• Finance, and
• Audit and Risk.
• Human Resources and Development
• Facilities
2. To lead and manage Sci-Bono in the capacity of Deputy to the CEO,
3. To account to the CEO for the delivery of the Annual Operating Plan (Impact/Financial) to achieve the Sci-
bono Discovery Centre Strategic Plan 2024 targets.
4. To secure the functionality of Sci-Bono to drive extensive and sustainable growth.
5. To drastically improve Sci-Bono end-to-end organization wide and specific departments' operations by
introducing standard operating procedures, forms and templates for all approved polices; and introduce effective
operating systems to ensure efficiency; and synergy and alignment amongst all Sci-Bono departments both core
and support functions.
6. To establish effective Operations Committee (OPCO) to manage, control and improve all operations of Sci-bono.

Key Responsibilities

1. SCI-BONO STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION
• Assist the CEO with development and implementation of the organization 5-year strategy, annual performance
plans, annual operational plan, and individual departmental operational plans.
• Assist all managers with the review and alignment of policies to the newly approved Strategic Plan. Develop
and/or review all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the whole organization to align to the new and/or
amended policies to achieve the new Strategic Plan.
2. RISK MANAGEMENT
• Review and improve Organization-wide and Departmental Operational Risk Registers
• Ensure all identified operational risks are mitigated and resolved.
3. STRENTHEN MONITORING AND EVALUATION (M&E)
• Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of all organizational operations and activities using the approved
Sci-Bono Monitoring and Evaluation Framework.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented operations, SOPs, forms, and templates improve organization
efficiently

4. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
• Identifying and developing strategic business relationships with the internal and external stakeholders.
• Develop and execute a strategic operational plan that meets or exceeds organizational expectation.

5. OPERATIONAL PLANS DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED
• Develop the organization-wide operational plan,
• Ensure each department develops in operational plan aligned to the organization-wide operational plan and
Strategic Plan of the Organization.
• Implement and monitor all operational plan
• Ensure all operational plans, ensure programs and activities in core-business display all the elements of Sci-
Bono vision of (i) a world class science centre, (ii) ensure participants acquire science knowledge, skills and
attitude, (iii) ensure participants use their acquired science knowledge, skills and attitude to innovate new
products and services that will improve the quality of life of South Africans, and (v) ensure participants use their
innovated products and service to complete in the global world of science.

6. PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
• Oversee managers team workforce to ensure that the workforce work as a team and remain motivated through
operational plan and performance.
• Oversee Management and administration of annual calendar of programmes, activities and events effective
planning and individual professional and personal career growth
• Driving the company’s operation capacities to surpass customer’s satisfaction and retention
• Establish and chair OPCO that inclusive of both core and none core business units and ensure its effectiveness
in improving operational efficiency.

7. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
• Develop and manage a budget for all the operations of the organization.
• Monitor expenditure with variance explanation
• Report to the Board and/or Committees as and when is required.

8. GOVERNANCE
• Write reports for different Board Committees and present them as and when it is required especially with
regards to organizational operations and core-business
• Participating in the development and/or review of the organization Strategic Plan and Annual Performance
Plans.

EDUCATION
• Master's Degree in Science Education or Master of Science with Education Qualification or equivalent.
• Management Qualification — certificate, diploma or degree.
• PhD in Science Education or equivalent will be an added advantage.

EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 5-years' experience in science education teaching, training and management especially In the non-
formal and informal settings.
• Minimum 5-years' experience in developing and managing all the operations of a medium size organization.
• Minimum 5-years' experience in managing finances of a department or organization.
• Minimum 5-years' experience in managing human resources of a department or whole organization.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in participating in governance structures of an organization including a Board of
Directors and its Committees.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS
• Knowledge, skills and right attitude of science education specifically non-formal and informal settings in
science centre.
• Knowledge of effective end-to-end operations of a medium-sized organization especially in science education.
• Knowledge of science content and curriculum that informs interactive exhibitions.
• Experience in the education sector.
• Understanding of business functions and operations such as Human Resources, Finance, Marketing etc.
• Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development.
• Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities.
