Deputy Principal Officer is required for a Company based in Durban.

JOB PURPOSE

Succesful candidate will be liable to carry out surveys for the purpose of ensuring compliance with the requirements of the applicable Acts, Regulations and Conventions. This position is entrusted to assist the Principal Officer as well as perform duties and functions of the Principal Officer when he/she is out of office.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Undertake surveys in accordance with legislation and other regulations relating to marine pollution and safety.
Draw up report of survey and certification relevant to the surveys conducted.
Set, conduct, evaluate and moderate relevant examinations based on prescribed standards.
Accredit SAMFAS stations and SAMSA doctors.
Conduct Eyesight Tests.
Undertake casualty / incident investigations and produce report and make recommendations.
Provide consultancy service to marine industry including interpretation of relevant legislation.
Assist in administration and performance management of staff.
Checking and signing statutory documentation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Master’s / Chief Engineer (Class 1) COC
Minimum 5 years post qualification experience
Minimum 3 years as a SAMSA surveyor
Working experience and knowledge of the Merchant Shipping Act and related codes and Regulations including its application
Working experience and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related Regulations complimenting the Maritime Occupational Safety Regulations and its application
Understanding of International Safety Management system
Knowledge and understanding of the Convention on the Law of the sea and marine protection related international conventions
