Aligned to College vision and strategy, the Dean provides academic leadership and accountability for the Faculty and Programme Management; Work Integrated Learning Monitoring and Coordination; Integrated Quality Assurance; Academic Governance and Policies; Library Resourcing and Academic Support to Students

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
PhD or Doctorate required in a cognate subject field
At least five years at Senior Academic level in higher education
At least three years high-level Academic Management experience
A proven teaching and research portfolio with curriculum development and assessment design experience.
Experience in dealing with regulatory affairs and academic quality assurance processes within a higher education environment.

Academic Leadership and Quality Assurance of Programmes
Contributes to overall quality assurance processes of college as it relates to all programmes and courses within the faculties.
This includes strategic planning, budgeting and allocation of resources for programme development, review and study guide updates.
Programme review at least every three years so that programme re-accreditation criteria are met, and programmes are kept updated and relevant.
Management of module content updates and study material and collaborates with the Online Unit to digitise materials in MyClass (Moodle LMS).
Quality assures the work done by Heads of Faculty (HoFs) and lecturers (permanent and independently contracted.
Works with (Academic Manager and HoFs on annual academic calendar ad academic planners for programmes
Providing Manager of Library and Information Services with list of annual prescribed and recommended readings and eBooks where appropriate
Liaising with Dean of Teaching and Learning/Online Unit to ensure innovative pedagogy and use of technology to support learning is incorporated into the programme materials and delivery
Creates and quality assures a fact sheet for each programme and ensures appropriate consultant/sales staff have programme knowledge.
QA done on the Website to ensure it reflects academically correct from a regulatory point of view, as well as fact sheets and other marketing collaterals
Identifies, resolves and monitors problems and issues related to the functions of the faculties.

Management and Quality Assurance of Assessment Design and Moderation
Ensure Systems and Practices protect the integrity of all assessments.
Review nature of assessments and drive assessment as learning, assessment for learning and assessment of learning.
Ensure all modules have a first assessment in Moodle of a MCQ nature to reduce courier costs and help take college from generation 1 correspondence to generation 3-4 technology enhanced learning.
Provide academic leadership in assessment design and the constructive alignment of assessments to learning outcomes.
Contribute to Assessment Policy development and associated processes for implementation.
Contribute to Moderation Policy development and associated processes for implementation.
Responsible for managing internal and external moderator appointments and processes.
Quality assure all assessments practices ensure deadlines are met and constructive feedback on assessment is given to students timeously ahead of the next assessment.
Ensure a secure assessment system and protocols and renew as needed
Oversee briefing to all assessors, moderators and invigilators
Contribute Faculty Results overview to Examinations Committee.
Analyse Faculty academic results per module, per student and per programme and per cohort to make recommendations that effect improvements in curricular or assessments where needed and in student success and retention rates.
Implement academic interventions within the faculty as identified through results analyses.

New Programme Design and Development and Accreditation
Provides strategic input into new programmes to be accredited based on market research.
Leads the process of evaluation of existing portfolio programmes with HoFs and proposes the development of new qualifications and courses in the faculty.
Input into the development of relevant short courses/SLPs in the faculty.
Works with HoFs to prepare HEQC online submissions for accreditation according to a developed project plan and process of new programme design and development.
Builds relationships with CHE, SAQA and DHET as well as professional bodies such as SAQC etc.
Analyses, reports and develops responses to results, programme evaluations, marketing feedback and changes in the landscape.
Works with industry to assess the need for future qualifications and to monitor relevance of existing qualifications.
Represent Institute on external bodies such as CHE Accreditation Programme Evaluation or professional bodies associated with Faculty subject fields
Networks with industry, stakeholder and Higher Education Providers to
Ensure articulation of degrees into postgraduate programmes as other institutions
Secure endorsements for brand programmes
To identify subject matter experts and external moderators for exit level modules
To create opportunities for future employment of graduate

Governance: policies and processes
Represent the faculty on Senate and its sub-committees
Chairs the Academic Board and contributes to the development of items for the Board
Develops policy as required and contributes to policy review
Develops Guideline documents where appropriate to assist with driving processes in line with policies
Manage formal processes related to curriculum development and renewal through governance structures
Manage formal processes related to assessments and moderation
Oversee compliance with policies, regulatory frameworks and academic governance and addresses any risk issues within faculty
Resolves any areas of non-compliance and escalates concerns to the Academic Board where appropriate

Work Integrated Learning Monitoring, Coordination and Academic Support for Students
Ensure that the WIL best practices are incorporated into every programme especially Higher Certificates and Diplomas where WIL is central to the core purpose of the programme.
Design of WIL logbooks and procedures for guiding faculty and Students
Developing the WIL Coordinators to ensure CHE compliance with criterion 15.
The integration of four types of WIL for programmes where most suitable:
Work-based Learning/Work Placed Learning (WPL)
Project-based Learning (PJBL)
Problem-based Learning (PBL)
Work-Directed theoretical Learning (WDTL)
Ensuring that all academic tutoring students may need is arrange with academic staff (ICs and perm) through an academic tutor system for distance students.

Faculty Academic Staffing Approvals and Scholarship within the Faculty
Approval of lecturers on faculty programmes so that one-up regulatory requirements in the cognate area are adhered to
Approval of all Assessors, Moderators, Invigilators and Independent Contractors
Monitor faculty academic staff workloads and approvals of types of Academic Leave
Puts into place an academic development plan and implements for academic staff (like workshops on constructive alignment, WIL assessments, distance pedagogy, MCQs, Marking assignments online, Plagiarism and referencing etc)
Promoting Scholarship and Research outputs of Academic Staff in the faculties
Guides and mentors academic staff who write articles for presentation and submission to accredited journals.
Supervises postgraduate students and trains site postgraduate co-ordinators and supervisors.
Encourages and mentors academic staff with higher degree studies
