Responsible for mapping out the Legal landscape within which the company operates, and ensuring that (together with the Compliance function) legal agreements entered into and business practices adopted protect the company’s commercial and other interests, safeguard the company from legal or any other related actions (including regulatory). The incumbent is expected to liaise with the external legal counsel where required
Management function:
• Responsible for managing a team of Legal Advisors and related professionals. Leading and managing the Legal team is one of the most critical responsibilities. This responsibility includes all aspects related to motivating, mentoring, upskilling and coaching of the team.
• As representative of the Legal team, but also stemming from the seniority of the position, attend and actively participate in management forums and other committee meetings
• Manage and prioritise the delivery of the team workload.
Legal:
• Review agreements drafted by the Legal Advisors which include Over-the-Counter derivative instruments documented in terms of ISDA and other Master Agreements.
• Manage the legal risk within the company and ensure that the necessary legal support is offered to the business.
• Accountable for overseeing and monitoring the legal aspects of the organisation to protect the company’s interest and support company’s business strategy.
• Assist in the negotiation of complex transactions and offer legal advice on the structuring of financial transactions across the business, including activities undertaken by the Financing Solutions, Global Markets and Investments divisions.
• Ensure proper implementation of transactions in accordance with credit and other approvals.
• Provide strategic guidance to leadership on all legal matters (this also includes expressing views and opinions related to compliance aspects of the business).
• Take part in special projects both within the company and the larger Group and the coordinating of such from a legal perspective.

Qualification and Experience
• LLB degree
• Admission as an attorney of the High Court
• 8 to 10 years relevant experience in a senior management role in Legal at a comparable financial institution
• A tertiary business / commercial qualification will be advantageous
• Would be beneficial if registered with the FSB as an approved Category 1 Compliance Officer and has passed the relevant SAIFM Compliance exams (particularly JSE Interest Rate Market and IRC Market; Derivatives Compliance Officer Exam, BESA and SAFEX). m20.7s
