Laboratory Technician - Bituminous Products

An International Surfacing Construction and material supply company operating in KZN is looking for suitably qualified Laboratory Technician -
Bituminous Products with a practical and theoretical knowledge of PG (Performance Grade) grade testing is required. The above position is
based in Durban.

Requirements / Qualifications

- A qualification in Civil/Materials testing or similar
- Supervisory level is advantageous
- PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE OF PG (PERFORMANCE GRADE) GRADE TESTING IS ESSENTIAL
- Approx. 5 - 8 years’ experience as a Laboratory Technician in a bitumen laboratory environment
- Knowledge of bituminous products advantageous
- Computer Literate
- Good numeracy skills
- Above average communication skills – verbal and written (ability to generate own appropriate
written communication; and ability to communicate in English with customers)
- Proven initiative and ability to work unsupervised
- High degree of quality orientation/attention to detail
- Deadline driven
- Previous experience working with ISO 9001

Key Performance areas – include but not limited to:

- Knowledge of binder types, classification and test methods
- Ability to present at formal industry sittings/events
- Design of slurry mixtures
- Preparation of Modified bitumen blends
- Manufacture of bitumen emulsions and cut backs
- Provide technical assistance on job sites when required
- Testing and evaluation of laboratory prepared binders as well as materials received from Colas
branches/sites/customers as part of trouble shooting and/or technical assistance.
- Electronically record the results of tests/evaluations according to prescribed standards
- Reporting on studies performed
- Maintenance and Calibration of Laboratory equipment
- Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support on the use and application of our products when required
- Upholding safety and quality standards.
