On the banks of the Vaal River in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district of the North West province is the town Christiana located. The most common spoken language is Tswana, followed by Afrikaans. The most important economic activity for the approximate 2,100 residents is farming. Especially maize, potatoes and onions are popular produce grown in the agricultural fields in and around Christiana. The town was founded in the 1870’s when diamonds were discovered in this area. Even today diamonds are still being mined. Every year in April the Delwers Fees Festival takes place, this is a festival honouring the Diamond Diggers. Other popular attractions in Christiana are the Digger’s Diamond Museum and several water sports on the Vaal River.
