Situated in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, in a timber growing region is Piet Retief. It is the head of the Mkhondo Local Municipality and located in close proximity to the Swaziland border. The town was named after the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief in 1883, who was murdered by the zulus under the orders of heir King Dingane for trying to settle on their land. Three years later in 1886, the residents declaired Klein Vrystaat, which at the time only contained a population of 72. This republic dimished 1891, when the Republic of South Africa incorperated it as one of it's own.
