Afrikaans for 'White Ridge' Witbank, located in the province of Mpumalanga, South Africa is named after a white sandstone outcrop where travellers used to stop and rest. Due to the large amount of coal it produces, on March 3rd 2006, it was officially renamed eMalahleni, meaning place of coal.Situated close to the Kruger National Park, and boasting the Witbank dam, Witbank has become quite the popular tourist destination. Guest houses and hotels abound, with most tourist attractions centring on the dam, such as camping and water skiing. The weather is hot and humid, with the rainfall mostly arriving in their summer months. Hiking trails are numerous, and this coal mining city is fast becoming a popular tourist destination.
