Lonmin plc. Was previously part of the Lonrho plc. mining division, producing Platinum metals which operates in the Bushveld complex, South Africa. The company was combined with the London, Rhodesian Mining and land company group. It was founded in 1909 and now listed on the London Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock exchange as well as serving part of the FTSE 250 complex. Lonmin became internationally renowned after following the recent Marikana miners’ strike in August 2012. The company is involved in discovering, extracting, refining and marketing of PGMs, creating value for their shareholders and creating a successful management team. The metals produced are important for industrial applications and the extensive use of jewelry. Through these key factors, in their operation module; “people, planet, profit” lies the success of the Lonmin mines. They believe that through following the module, it provides a framework for understanding, complex sustainable issues that arise in the environment and the people/employees.
