The town of Thohoyandou is situated in the Limpopo province and is known for formerly being the capital of the bantustan of Venda. The name of the town Thohoyandou is a word from the language of Venda which means 'head of the elephant'. Thohoyandou was built and also established in the late 1970s. It was established by the Prime Minister of the Venda Bantustan who was president Patrick Ramaano Mphephu. The town became the capital of the Venda Bantustan in 1979 when Venda was made a republic. In celebration of the new independence of Venda, a stadium was built and named the Venda Independence Stadium. The name was later changed in 1994 to Thohoyandou Stadium. Thohoyandou is one of the most rapidly growing towns within the province of Limpopo today and is also the home of the University of Venda.
