JOB PURPOSE:
To manage and coordinate the provision of an effective geotechnical service for sub-surface and underground operations.

Minimum Qualifications:
B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering.

Minimum Experience and Knowledge:
Applicant must have a minimum of 10-15 years’ relevant experience in an underground mining environment;
At least 5 years’ experience in fully mechanized sublevel open stoping and stoping with consolidated backfill methods is essential;
Proven track record in operational mining projects essential, experience in project start up and operational readiness desired;
Proven experience in geotechnical design analysis using relevant software and application of recognized empirical methods;
Proven experience in geotechnical project planning and design; and

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Safety, Health, Environment and Community
Accountable for the management and adherence of the Safety, Health, Environment and Community (SHEC) policies and procedures in area of responsibility as well as compliance to the statutory requirements as stipulated in the prospecting and mining licenses;
Enforce the company’s SHEC policy and code of conduct and ensure they are adhered to by all staff, suppliers and contractors; and

Leadership and Execution
Develop the medium to long term geotechnical plan aligned with business objectives, best practice, and the production plan;
Formulate ground control management strategies;
Provide geotechnical guidance and input into mine closure planning;
Contribute to, review, audit, and sign off geotechnical databases and models;
Review annual and LOM plans to advise on the safest mining sequence using numerical modelling;
Coordinate and review geotechnical design and analysis for sub-surface excavations and underground structures;
Develop ground support systems using engineered rock mechanic principles;
Complete performance analysis, using various geotechnical engineering software or otherwise for sub-surface excavations and underground mine structures;
Implement geotechnical systems and procedures in the operation;
Evaluate the rock mechanics of mining areas through the study of models, designs and processes to optimise ore extraction;
Conduct ongoing audits of ground support conditions to ensure compliance with company standards, procedures and government regulation;
Conduct underground site inspections, ensuring ground control management programmes are in place and maintained in line with geotechnical best practice and standards;
Ensure all fall of ground occurrences and ground support failures are thoroughly investigated, documented and that corrective actions are implemented;
Develop and implement mine operating systems, standards, templates and procedures in accordance with mine policy and regulations; and
Responsible for the utilization of allocated funds and resources to enable the achievement of geotechnical objectives.
Relationships
Co-ordinate and communicate effectively with other site technical, operational, support, and managerial teams; and
Establish and maintain effective relationships with all key stakeholders and business partners to ensure achievement of business objectives.

Commercial and Risk Management
Establish and implement systems, processes and procedures to ensure quality management; and
Manage QA/QC programmes for ground control systems including rock bolts, fibercrete, grout, and backfill and ensure any non-compliances are addressed appropriately and in a timely manner.

Compliance
Oversee and review the completion of all geotechnical related statutory monitoring and reporting requirements.
Reporting and Records
Develop systems of reporting and reconciliation as needed to effectively manage the performance of the department, in line with site and company requirements.

Human Resource Management
Provides on-the-job training for subordinate staff, monitors behaviour and takes necessary remedial action, including recommending disciplinary action, in line with laid down policies and procedures;
Proposes and implements staff development and training programmes for the area of responsibility to ensure a competent, efficient and motivated staff;
Provides technical guidance and coaching to subordinate staff, and recommends subordinate staff for training;
Coach, mentor and develop individual and team capability; and
Encourage and lead a work culture of continuous improvement.
