The Accountant is responsible to provide accurate and reliable financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data and preparing reports

The ROLE

General accounting responsibilities include

* Prepare monthly VAT reconciliations and VAT 201's
* Prepare the annual income tax return
* Maintain the accounting records, including the review of month end and annual balance sheet item reconciliations
* Prepare monthly cost recovery calculations for allocating indirect costs to projects
* Prepare journal entries with supporting documents
* Maintain a register of office leases and other service level agreements
* Prepare monthly management accounts
* Prepare donor financial reports
* Prepare quotations and invoices for the income generating projects
* Maintain the fixed asset register
* Review the insurance policy to ensure assets are suitably covered
* Supervise and be a mentor to the bookkeeper, finance clerks/interns and administrators
* Preparation of the audit files and supporting documents for the statutory and donor audits
* Assist with budgeting, costing and new funding proposals

Funder specific responsibilities include

* Research and keep abreast of relevant statutory and donor policies and compliance requirements
* Review monthly finance reports of grant specific Implementing Partners within the scope of donor compliance
* Review monthly and year-to-date spend vs budget reports
* Update and maintain finance reporting tools
* Mentor the Organisation grant specific Implementing Partners by providing feedback on the finance reports and recommending improvements on financial reports and/or internal control processes
* Perform monthly site visits to grant specific Implementing Partners
* Attend programme & payment meetings

Key Requirements

Qualifications and experience:

* Postgraduate degree or equivalent in finance and completed articles (SAIPA or SAICA) (non-negotiable)
* Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an accounting role (non-negotiable)
* Experience working with SAGE Evolution (non-negotiable)
* Experience with projects and project accounting will be advantageous
* Experience within the NGO environment and donor reporting requirements will be preferred
* Previous experience in managing staff will be advantageous

Skills and attributes:

* Strong computer skills, with work experience using different accounting systems and MS Office, specifically intermediate MS Excel skills (e.g. pivot tables, v-lookups)
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify data quality issues
* Attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and thorough engagement with tasks
* Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, high stress environment
* Strong planning, time management and project management skills
* Results-oriented, professional, accountable and proactive
* Strong interpersonal skills
* Ability to mentor Implementing Partners with empathy.
* Proven ability to work as a team member with multidisciplinary teams
* Valid driver’s license, own reliable vehicle and willingness to travel within South Africa
* Remuneration will be competitive, based on skills and experience
