The Commercial Underwriting Manager is a highly technical role with strong broker market focus.

Qualifications and Experience

Matric
FAIS compliant: 60 credits on NQF level 4 (Commercial Lines)
Excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Power Point
5 years’ experience with regards to short term Commercial Insurance (Underwriting/Broking/Claims)
5 years’ structure and process management experience
5 years’ reinsurance experience


Responsibilities:

Underwriting new and existing commercial business to maintain profitability while creating a platform to aid in the growth of the business as a whole.
Conversion of quotes is primary function within this role.
Commercial Underwriting Managers are responsible for making sound underwriting decisions in accordance with mandates and must be able to take initiative.
The Commercial Underwriting Manager is a key source of knowledge and influence to the business at large
Accountable for the day to day running of the department and profitability of facilities. A key function is to provide support to the business as a whole.


Principal Accountabilities:

Growth and Profitability of facilities
Conversion of quotations
Identify re-insurance areas and action appropriately
Effective renewal terms of complex and unprofitable risks
Effective screening actions on unprofitable accounts
Providing quality and effective feedback on high level technical queries
Work within mandates
Take ownership of non-standard commercial products (e.g. Assets All Risks products) – referrals to specialists and alternative preferred insurers where business does not fit the facility
Execute regular quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance
Work together with Business Development Exec to grow franchise model
Building and maintaining relationships at various levels within the organization including Sales, underwriting, claims, specialists, finance etc.
