Medical Officer/ Epidemiologist
One (1) year fixed term contract

Main purpose of the job
To provide medical/epidemiological and programme manager support to the maternal influenza vaccination
study as well as the other programmes within the Center for Respiratory Diseases and Meningitis (CRDM)

Location
Sandringham Johannesburg or Groote Schuur Hospital, Capetown

Key performance areas
Management of ethical approvals, recertification’s and reports for the maternal influenza study and other
surveillance programmes
Ensuring that clinical report forms are accurate and up to date with changes
Assist with analysis of data generated by the maternal influenza study and other surveillance programmes
Assist with formulation and submission of regular reports to the regional sites
Site-visits to the antenatal clinics and surveillance sites to deal with clinic/site specific problems, surveillance
officer problems and to evaluate local conditions
Meet with the Department of Health and other stakeholders involved in the maternal influenza study
Assist in organising an annual Principal Investigator and an annual Surveillance Officer meeting
Create and produce reports and contribute significantly to existing NICD publications such as communiqués
and bulletins as well as produce scientific papers on relevant subjects.
Present surveillance/ research findings at national and international conferences and meetings
Write annual progress reports and reports after all site-visits and meetings
Supervise and manage staff.

Required minimum education and training
MBBCh/ MSc in Epidemiology and Biostatistics/ Masters in Public health.

Professional body registration
HPCSA registration for Medical Officer

Required minimum work experience
Post graduate working experience will be advantageous

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
Ability to produce reports and scientific publications is advantageous
Microsoft office skills
Communication skills both written and verbal
Maintain diplomacy and confidentiality
Strong managerial and organizational abilities
