Patent Search Clerk • A bilingual person with excellent command of English • Meticulous, dedicated and self – reliant • Ability to work under pressure • Ability to use initiative and work independently • Ability to deal with people at all levels • Computer literate on MS office packages • Good typing skills • Knowledge of Patents Act (present and repealed) and Designs Act (present and repealed), an advantage. • Name searches of patents and registered designs within agreed time frames • Prepare status reports on instruction and compile accurate statistics on cases filed • Ensure timeous distribution of statistics to the relevant people • Perusal of Patent Office files and checking registers • Handling telephone queries from Pretoria office, Johannesburg office, Durban office and Cape Town office • Outwork, including chasing up official actions, marking clerical corrections (informal), checking on issue of acceptances, collecting and dispatching filing receipts and checking and chasing up recordals • Checking bulk computer print–outs for status, proprietor and address for service and handling telephone queries for Renewals Department • Check renewal list with information on registers at DTI • Regular checks of patent files and registers for caveat files • File monthly report of cases for statistical purposes • Preparing lists of patent applications filed by major competitors (S&F, J&K and DMK) for monitoring purposes • Copying of P2’s and files - distribute to the relevant secretaries • Accurately update changes on computer print-outs • Paginating and putting Court files in order • Ordering and chasing up photocopies • Taking Patent office files to the Patent Office personnel and discussing different matters
