Plant Chemist (ENVIRO) - BEE

Our client is involved in the Operations and Maintenance of Renewable plants.

They are looking for a BEE (South african citizen ONLY - black, Indian, Coloured) candidate to fulfil this role.

Job Summary

· To manage the plant Laboratory and related ancillary services, e.g. the water and effluent treatment plants (but not limited thereto) in order to produce reliable analytical results that are true and correct and are accepted with confidence by operations staff that are affected by these results.

· To produce all the necessary reports that are used for the control of the plant and process operations

· Supervises, controls and ensures that all plant chemical maintenance and laboratory activities are accomplished in accordance with authorized plans, procedures, costs & quality standards

Sample Analysis

· Conducts sample analysis of different substances in the plant i.e. Demin water, steam, etc. and report any abnormalities on the process for correction.

· Supervises the operation of water treatment plant i.e. process raw water and generate portable water and demineralized water.

· Supervises the chemical dosage units

· Supervises Cooling water treatment

· Manages plant laboratory.

· Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the plant running conditions and chemical dosing

· Maintains appropriate record of chemical plant activities.

· Ensures calibration of identified critical equipment in the laboratory.

Conducts frequent measurement of water quality in the laboratory and reports deviations, if identified

Environmental Management (Statutory appointment). IT IS VITAL THAT YOU HAVE THIS EXPERIENCE!

· Ensures EMP compliance.

· Ensures monthly Environmental reports are submitted to operations manager.

· Ensures measures are implemented to prevent long-term environmental degradation.

· Ensures Operations and Maintenance has minimum impact on the environment.

· Monitor dam, ponds levels for contaminants, PH levels, etc. and minimize the risks of environmental contraventions.

· Ensure proper waste disposal measures.

· Supervise, direct and co-ordinate the activities of shift chemist and other personnel assigned to Chemical section. Reporting, Relationship: PC or SS

Documentation and Data Control

· Ensures the documentation provided is clear, adequate, legible and compatible.

· Follows applicable works instructions procedures for the various sampling and analysis undertaken.

· Does all necessary data capturing, filing and report writing

· Gives written feedback to Operations Manager.

· Keeps environment / Safety file and all other filed documents up to date.

· Ensures accurate record keeping for future reference.

· Prepares reports and appropriate recommendation to superior, to help evaluate progress and take appropriate action.

• SHEQ

· Conducts or have conducted a hazard analysis of all chemicals and related substances used on site and take the necessary corrective action.

· Implements, monitors and controls of Safety Systems in area of responsibility.

· Identifies risks and implements risk mitigation actions.

· Always ensures that SHEQ standards are met.

· Carries out responsibilities of an Environmental Officer, as stipulated by the OHS act.

· Does quality inspections and assessments.

· Promotes safety and quality at all times.

· Reports any incidents, damaged or lost equipment.

· Enforce good housekeeping at all time.

· Conducts environmental internal audits as per requirements.

· Observes and guides the implementation of work safety procedures and practice.

· Ensures availability of MSDS for chemicals.

· Ensures availability of suitable PPE, eyewash facility, first aid measures in the chemical handling area.

General

· Must be able to work under pressure.

· Should be able to perform extra duties required from time to time.

· Keeps Operations Manager informed on plant and task status on a daily basis.

· Perform any other legitimate activities as required.

Ensures availability of bulk chemicals, fine chemicals, glassware’s and other consumables and to raise Purchase Requisitions as and when required.

Minimum Qualifications

· National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry

· Environmental Management Diploma

· 4- 5 years related experience preferably in a petro-chemical, power or desalination Plant

· Awareness of SHEQ Management systems principles.

· Knowledge of applicable legal requirements.

· Hazard Risk Assessment

· Aspect Impact Assessment.

· Knowledge of Environmental & Health impact of chemicals being used in the plant.

· Should be well conversed with Power / Desalination. Operational activities in Chemical Laboratory

· Decision making & Analytical

· Team work

· SAP working knowledge is preferred, ISO9001, 14001, OHSAS 180001 awareness
