Reporting to the Operations Manager, the ideal incumbent will be responsible for providing an engineering service to the Sawmill. The scope of responsibilities is set out below:

Key performance areas

• GRM2 appointee & Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Maintenance for plant and machinery at the mill
• New projects and capital expenditure
• Environmental Issues

1. Occupational Health and Safety Act
Responsible that all the provisions of the act, in relation to machinery are complied to. Participate and support the company’s SHE programs.

2. Maintenance for plant and machinery at the mill
• Manage, control and develop a competent, motivated and reliable technical department consisting of a Foreman, Planner, 10 artisans and 15 assistants as well as a compliment of 16 Boiler operating staff.
• Responsible person for the maintenance of plants with an installed capacity exceeding 3000kW.
• Manage and implement the maintenance strategy and plans.
• Identify short, medium- and long-term engineering needs for the mill by taking part in the business and production plan for the mill.
• Develop and maintain the condition monitoring, maintenance scheduling, downtime recording and root cause analysis systems for the mill.
• Ensure documentation of critical plant spares are current and that correct and adequate spares are kept in the stores.
• Assist with the management of the saw shop, ensuring correct blade quality, acceptable finish, accuracy of cutting and blade life, correct settings of machines, blade preparation and maintenance is done.
• Maintenance of steam boilers, water treatment plants, steam distribution systems and timber drying kilns.

3. New projects and capital expenditure
• Advise mill manager of engineering capital requirements to improve mill efficiencies by evaluating existing and new designs, options and costing them.
• Keep abreast of technological changes and implement depending on cost effectiveness and suitability to ensure sustainable processes

4. Environmental issues

• Ensure that legal and company environmental standards are adhered to, with specific reference to water pollution and treatment, air pollution, CCA treatment plant, waste dumping.

Position Specifications:

? Must have a BSc degree/Tech/National Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent
? Must have at least 5 years managerial experience in a manufacturing environment.
? A Government Certificate of Competence.

• Must be prepared to do standby duties
