Our client, an international power plant owner and operator, seeks an experienced Power Engineer that will assist in the management and execution of power engineering and project-related tasks within the Operations Department. Together with the Senior Power Engineer, the Power Engineer will focus on the development, implementation and maintenance of sound power engineering practices through the company’s existing assets, assets under development and assets under construction, with the intention of optimising life-cycle performance.

The role will require frequent travel for onsite activities.

Experience & Qualifications
1. B.Sc Eng/B.Eng in Electrical Engineering or integrated electrical and electronic engineering
2. Five years’ experience in design, maintenance and operation of power systems
3. Demonstrated experience in LV, MV and HV electrical systems
4. Demonstrated knowledge of the key balance of plant IEC/SANS technical standards
5. Exposure to/knowledge of predictive maintenance techniques and implementation of reliability centred maintenance practices
6. Experience in wind and photovoltaic plants would be an advantage
7. Formal risk assessment training would be an advantage
8. Formal training in project management would be beneficial
9. Valid light vehicle driver’s license

Key duties (not limited to):
1. Assist the Senior Power Engineer to
1.1. Provide expert technical support to electrical maintenance personnel
1.2. Compile policies, specifications and standards
1.3. Compile emergency and contingency plans
1.4. Define and documenting scopes of work for contractors
1.5. Manage contractors and consultants
1.6. Draft, implement and optimise maintenance schedules
1.7. Compile standard operating and maintenance procedures
1.8. Conduct internal technical audits of the company’s assets
1.9. Conduct internal technical training at plant sites and at head office
1.10. Implement and manage technical change control systems
2. Provide technical consulting to the business development department
3. Perform other work-related activities as requested by the Senior Power Engineer

1. Experience in the design, maintenance and operation of HV and MV power systems, including cables, power and instrument transformers, switchgear, controlgear and phase IV protection relays
2. Working knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safety standard. Implementation experience would be an advantage
3. Experience in power system digital simulation packages. Experience with Digsilent PowerFactory would be an advantage
4. Working knowledge of NERSA grid codes
5. Working knowledge of computerised maintenance management systems
6. Ability to read and understand schematics
7. Knowledge of primary and secondary plant testing would be an advantage
8. Very good MS Word and MS Excel skills; exposure to MS project (or similar) and MS PowerPoint would be an advantage
9. Competent in all communications including clear, concise e-mails; report writing and presentation skills
10. Able to manage stress and high-pressure situations
11. Must be a self-starter and able to work independently
12. Good team player; able to balance team and individual responsibilities.
13. Able to handle multiple projects, prioritise work and work effectively under limited supervision
