Synopsis:
Leading financial services provider based in Sandton requires suitably skilled and experienced Oracle DBA to support, coordinate and maintain Oracle database applications by installing, configuring, troubleshooting and repairing the database

Minimum Requirements:
• Matric
• Diploma / Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology
• Certification – example: Oracle Database Administrator Certificate
• Certification in Oracle DBA 10g or 11 g preferable
• Proficient file management techniques, database design, data warehousing concepts, Oracle, HTML and XML
• Advanced knowledge of system and software quality assurance best practices and methodologies
• Advanced knowledge of networks and PC operating systems
• Advanced knowledge of network hardware, protocols and standards
• Extensive technical and design knowledge
• Good administrative and applicative knowledge
• Knowledge of Windows, Linux and Sun Solaris environments
• Administrator of VERITAS Cluster with Oracle databases
• 5 to 8 years proven experience in large Oracle Database Administration and Maintenance
• Strong programming skills in Oracle
• Experience in Oracle management and troubleshooting
• Experience in managing internal and external interfaces
• Experience in project management tools an advantage
• Knowledge of Windows and Linux / Unix environments
• 3 years experience in insurance / financial services sector preferable
• Knowledge of Oracle Application Server

Job Description:

Suitably skilled and qualified Oracle DBA to take responsibility for:
• Administration of 10g / 11g Oracle databases, Solaris OS, Veritas Storage and Cluster and Oracle 11g BEA WebLogic Application Server instances, including:
o Creating new 10g / 11g ORACLE databases
o Creating OracleRMan backups and restores as per standard checklist
o Migrating new application upgrades
o OracleRDBMS and Application Server software upgrades, installation and maintenance
o Participating and adhering to strict change management processes
o Attending to calls logged on call-logging system
o Notifying business units of possible problems immediately that may prevent or delay work, and informing them of estimated hours or estimated completion dates for assigned tasks
o Modernisation to existing programs as required to improve maintainability
o Documenting and implementing Oracle standards and operational procedures
o Ensuring that all databases meet architecture standards and specifications
o Analyzing system logs and identifying potential issues with Operating System (including Veritas Storage and Cluster)
o Writing Unix scripts for administration and automation of tasks
o Assisting developers with deployment of new applications
o Documenting all changes and enhancements
o Documenting and improving existing processes
o Complying with all policies and procedures
•Installing new software, including:
o Installing new versions of Oracle software (RDBMS and Application server), application software (Sungard Compass) and other software related to Oracle DBMS administration
o Testing new software prior to move into a production environment
• Configuring hardware and software, including:
o Working closely with team leader on software Sun/Unix and Veritas Storage / HA installations, and configuring hardware and software to optimum functionality with Oracle DBMS
• Security administration, including:
o Monitoring and administering Oracle DBMS security
o Implementing disaster recovery for Oracle databases, ensuring data and access to data is secure
• Data analysis, including:
o Analyzing data stored in database and making recommendations relating to performance and efficiency of data storage
o Communicating with business analysts to establish needs
• Database design (preliminary), including:
o Conducting sufficient testing to identify and resolve problems before modification or enhancement iare promoted
o Modifying existing programs to resolve problems or add functionality based on problems identified or enhancements received
o Involved at preliminary database-design stages, eliminating many problems that might occur
o Identifying potential problems and assisting development team with special performance considerations
o Supporting software engineers with ensuring development methodology and associated deliverables are maintained and followed for database projects
• Monitoring and evaluation of Oracle Database developments, including:
o Monitoring database performance statistics, tuning and database maintenance and recovery
o Effectively monitoring and taking action to ensure coordination and effectiveness of all components and activities, and deciding on issues requiring escalation
• Standards and best practices, including:
o Identifying and promoting best practice in existing areas
o Publishing and entrenching technical standards in environment
o Keeping abreast of current thinking around best practice and participating in industry forums
o Setting best practices and standards for software engineering for structured data in Group
o Ensuring adoption of frameworks, standards and procedures
