Our client in the Materials Science and Manufacturing environment has a vacancy for a Senior Project Manager in their Sensor Science and Technology group. You will manage the dynamic portfolio of research and development projects within SST.
They conduct applications-driven R&D in the general field of sensors and actuators. Specific R&D focus areas include the fields of ultrasonics (sonar and medical); smart structures and materials (guided wave ultrasound); and electro-optics (industrial camera systems). Projects are conducted across the innovation chain in order to develop ultimate solutions into the market. Such work is often conducted in collaboration with industrial clients, both local and international.
Qualification, skills and experience required for this position are:
• Preferably a BEng degree or equivalent (e.g. BTech) in electronic or mechanical engineering.
• A project management qualification.
• More than five years’ experience in project management in an R&D environment.
• Ability to manage projects and contracts through the entire project life-cycle (planning, initiation, execution, control and close-out).
• Willingness and ability to handle several small- to medium-sized projects (e.g. R0.5 m to R5 m) at a time.
• Managing R&D projects requires the ability to be open to change from both the client and project resource sides and the candidate needs to be comfortable handling such dynamics.
• Proven organisational, communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
• Report-writing and contract-preparation skills.
• Ability to participate in contract negotiations.
• Ability to work closely with clients in reporting on contracts.
• A team player who has good interpersonal skills.
• Good computer skills and working knowledge of at least one recognised project management software programme.
• Must be a self-starter who is able to work independently and have a strong track record of delivery and personal leadership.
• Experience of project management within a defence R&D environment would be an advantage.
