Mainstream Renewable Power is a renewable energy development company with operations in North America, South America, South Africa, UK offshore and Germany offshore. Our core business is to develop, build and operate renewable energy plants thereby helping to build a sustainable future – globally and locally. We are seeking skilled and motivated individuals to join our South African Construction team working on multi Billion Rand Renewable Energy Projects across South Africa and Africa.

Key Responsibilities

As the on-site SHEQ Advisor, you will provide expert health and safety, and environmental advice in relation to planning, construction and operation of Mainstream’s onshore wind farms, solar projects and associated works. You will be responsible for ensuring that all relevant safety legislation is adhered to and policies and practices are adopted planned and implemented. You will monitor and review the protective and preventative measures that will ensure Mainstream’s business activities are carried out in a safe manner with the target of zero accidents.
You must:
• Have a sound knowledge of HSE Management systems and principles
• Have a sound knowledge of South African Health and Safety Legislation
• Be a competent HSE advisor to Mainstream Project Managers, Line managers and to the Principal Contractor
• Monitor contractors compliance in terms of the Client’s Health and Safety Specifications and South African HSE Legal requirements
• Attend planning meetings and ensure that HSE strategies of contractors plan ahead in terms of the scope of work
• Perform regular site inspections and thereby identify potential hazards and determine ways of recusing the risks, and advise contractors accordingly
• Perform audits on contractors HSE systems on a monthly basis as contemplated per law.
• Assist in evaluating and monitoring contractor risk assessments and method statements in terms of risk and legislative compliance
• Ensure that incident investigations are performed in compliance with the Client health and safety specification requirements
• Ensure that contractors submit HSE reports timeously as required per the health and Safety Specifications
• Understand, promote and adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations and policies in undertaking all activities.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies to ensure Mainstream is compliant with mandatory requirements.
• Proactively keep up to date with all latest developments and new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all the Health & Safety legislation and any developments that affect Mainstream’s business activities.
• Ensure Asset Delivery are kept aware of health and safety site requirements and that health and safety is a priority for all team members
• Promote Mainstream culture of continuous HSE improvement and to share good practice across the company.
• Proactively engage with project stakeholders, partners, industry, Local associations and regulators on project related HSE issues.
• Ensure a consistent approach is taken to HSE onsite.
• Assist the SHEQ Manager in developing a localised version of the Mainstream Integrated Management system. Including certification.
• Assist the SHEQ Manager in improving the quality of health and Safety Specifications for future projects
• Assist the SHEQ manager in the production of management reports, newsletters and bulletins as required
• Provide HS&E reporting for the Onshore Business to the Mainstream Project Manager and SHEQ Manager.
• Monitor progress of the Onshore Business against Mainstream’s HSE targets.

Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience

The candidate must:
• Have a proven track record in the HSE industry
• Hold at least 10 years’ HSE experience in the construction industry of which at least 5 years was spent in a HSE management / supervisor position with a principal contractor or client.
• Hold relevant qualifications i.e. Samtrac, NADSAM, Nebosh.

Experience in the renewable industry would be advantageous.

• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

This position will be based on site with occasional travel to Cape Town.
