The Estate Agency Affairs Board is the official regulating authority for the estate agency industry. Every estate must, by law, be registered with them. Established in 1976 in terms of the Estate Agency Affairs Act 112 of 1976, the EAAB has a mandate to to regulate and control certain activities of estate agents in the interest of the public. The Agency currently sets and runs the examination to qualify as an estate agent. This is known as The Estate Agency Affairs Board Exam. The exam is not mandatory and those who do not wish to write the exam may register as Candidate Estate Agents. The Candidate estate agents are required to work for a company with a registered Principal for a period of one year, and they will have restricted capacity as an estate agent. The EAAB has a publication called AGENT Magazine. It contains a combination of professional editorial input that carries the voice of the EAAB as a Regulator together with other industry information. The magazine’s in-depth features inform readers of aspects pertaining to the residential real estate industry as well as current property trends. Currently, the EAAB only has one office and it is located in Johannesburg.
