Lonmin Platinum

Lonmin is one of the world’s largest producers of Platinum Gold Metals (PGMs). They are engaged in the discovery, extraction, refining and marketing of PGMs and they create value for their shareholders through their vertically integrated business model, as one of only four ‘mine-to-market’ primary PGM producers. The company operates in two divisions: 1.Mining- Marikana mining, Limpopo mining and Pandora Joint Venture. All of their operations are located in the Bushveld complex in South Africa. Their Marikana mining operations, on the Western Limb of the Bushveld, contribute (currently) around 92% of their annual production. The company’s Limpopo mine is situated near Polokwane on the Bushveld’s Eastern Limb. Both of these operations are used to mine the Upper Group 2 and Merensky PGM-bearing reefs. The key focus of Lonmin’s mining operations is the drive towards mechanisation, which they believe represents safer and more cost efficient alternative to conventional mining. 2.Process Division. The ore extracted from their mines, is transferred to Lonmin’s Process Division which converts it into refined metal.
