South African Breweries Limited, is the dominant brewing company in South Africa. Informally known as SAB, the brewing and bottling company is a wholly owned subsidiary of SABMiller. SAB was founded in 1895 as Castle Breweries to serve a growing market o0f miners and prospectors in and around Johannesburg. Two years it was founded, the company became the first industrial company to list on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). In 1898, the company listed on the London Stock Exchange. In South Africa, the SAB operates seven breweries with an annual capacity of 3.1 billion litres. Their principal beer brands are Carling Black Label, Castle Lager, Castle Lite, Castle Milk Stout and Hansa Pilsener. Amalgamated Beverage Industries, SAB’s soft drink division, is the largest producer and distributor of Coca-Cola brands in South Africa. SAB is also the owner of The South African Breweries Hop Farms (a barley farming company), The South African Breweries Maltings (a barley malting company), and The South African Breweries Barley Farms (a barley farming company). They also hold a 60 percent stake in Coleus Packaging, a metal crown manufacturer. 75% Of the SAB’s employees are from previously disadvantaged groups. At its first round of suppliers, SAB’s operations support an estimated 48 000 jobs.
