Is a town founded in 1884 and located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, on the banks of the Orange River. The town was named after Sir Thomas Upington, Attorney-General and then Prime Minister of the Cape. It was originally a mission station run by Reverend Schröder and established in 1875. The town now houses the town museum, known as the Kalahari Orange Museum. Orange River Wine Cellars (OWC) is an organisation that produces Upington's most famous wines OWC has six depots in the area (all of them on the banks of the Orange River) at Upington, Kanoneiland, Grootdrink, Kakamas, Keimoes and Groblershoop. The wines from OWC are exported, inter alia, to Europe and the USA. The economy of Upington relies on tourism, the service industry and agriculture, where significant volumes of produce are exported to Europe. Several companies have also established their head offices in Upington.
