Chief Operating Officer (COO)

A Healthcare Company who is passionate about providing Clinical Care to HIV positive adults, children and adolescents is currently looking for a dynamic and driven Chief Operating Officer based in Durban.

This is a senior level position that will provide support to programmatic work, ensure that strategic goals and funding objectives are effectively and efficiently met within the specified time frames and develop overall administrative management strategy. In addition, the COO will be responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures both in finance and general operations.

Education, Training and Experience
• 10 years’ experience in a senior management role ideally with both external audit and in-house financial management experience gained in a high-growth organisation; experience with operations, finances, HR, and organisational development.
• Master’s degree in Business Management, Development Studies or related field/MBA.
• Post graduate qualification in project management.
• Preferable NGO / Funding Environment Experience
• Knowledge of USAID / PEFFAR / US Based funding
• Experience with finance and administration functions of international organisations.
• Exceptional strategic thinking, creative problem-solving skills and an ability to analyse and synthesise data from a range of sources.
• Skills and experience in managing staff and managing multiple offices.
• Solid working knowledge of budgeting, sales, business development, and strategic planning.
• Extensive experience with diverse bilateral and private donor funding rules and regulations, financial reporting and disclosure requirements.
• Prior experience providing technical assistance to partner organisations to strengthen their operations systems, including producing policies.
• A proven track record of facilitating progressive organisational change and development within a growing organisation.
• Strong experience in mentoring and coaching a team with diverse levels of expertise.
• Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administration initiatives.

Key performance areas

• Direct short-term, long-range planning and budget development to support strategic business goals.
• Plan, coordinate and execute budgeting processes to ensure organisation operations meet budget and other financial goals.
• Develop and implement relevant structures, internal controls, policies and procedures to ensure efficient operations and ensure compliance with the constitution, state and donor requirements.
• Contribute to the development of the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organisation.
• Serve as the management liaison in matters related to finance, HR and legal matters.
• Represent the organisation externally, as necessary, particularly in operational contract negotiations, pursue appropriate funding, participate in acquisition and growth activities to support overall business objectives and plans.
• Oversee, direct, and/or organise the work of all organisational operations including facilities management (offices and new buildings), IT systems; ensure smooth operational coherence and a high standard of functioning with the finance, communications and Human Resources team.
• Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality and provide training and development.
• Establish performance goals, monitor staff performance, assess policies for senior management, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities and conduct annual performance appraisals.
• Provide analytical support to all governance structures.
• Develop internal management reporting capabilities including the risk register and balanced scorecard.
