SCOPE OF THE ROLE

The site HSE Officer provides leadership for all Health, Safety and Environmental Programs and Systems within McCormick South Africa. The role is dedicated to developing, documenting and maintaining the HSE system, while also implementing proactive safety processes, enabling safe employee practices and behaviours, reducing injuries, increasing HSE awareness, inspections and internal auditing. This role also oversees environmental sustainability initiatives and report on monthly performance

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Execute HSE strategy direction and work priorities (in conjunction with line management) for the continuous improvement of the business HSE management programme and systems.
• Serves as the HSE resource for McCormick RSA, ensuring documented procedures and processes for safety compliance, practices and behaviours
• Maintain Legal Registers and ensures the site’s compliance with the OHS Act, South African regulatory requirements and other McCormick corporate HSE standards
• Advises line management and assists with the implementation of new or existing HSE-related legislation, rules and Company standards.
• Develop Site HSE budget and manage spend effectively in line with budget and/or forecast
• Communicates and translates organizational safety objectives and practices into actionable solutions
• Maintains safety, organizational health and sustainability scorecard reporting. Derive meaningful data driven action plans to drive performance improvements
• With HR, develop and maintain robust HSE training programs for all staff.
• Leads and develops peers to effectively manage HSE in their functional areas
• Monitor and guide all on the site’s ‘Permit to Work’ and Contractor management system
• Oversees and audits all plant HSE and related training activities, including scheduled internal HSE audits and inspections.
• Produces and coordinates the yearly HSE action plan and input to the longer term HSE roadmap. Prepares monthly status update of same to Management.
• Responsible for preparations during HSE audits and other Quality and Food safety surveys such as BRC, AIB and specific customer audits
• Validates the performance of the Safety Committee and all injury / incident review boards, leading action plans and root cause analysis (RCA) through robust Incident Management and Investigations. Ensure incidents, RCA’s and investigations are documented and up to date
• Collaborates cross functionally to build a ‘safety first’ culture throughout the business and with all employees on site.


CANDIDATE PROFILE
• National diploma: Health & Safety or Risk Management, NEBOSH Certificate or SAMTRAC or Other Equivalent qualification
• Minimum 3 years’ occupational safety experience in a manufacturing plant, distribution and/or warehouse environment. Preferably in the FMCG.
• Fluency in English a minimum requirement. Other languages will be advantageous
• Good knowledge of MS Office
• Knowledge of SAP will be an asset
• First Aider
• HACCP experience
• Strong problem solving (people and technical) skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to alter hours and work a highly flexible schedule to meet business needs across a two-shift operation
• Experience in implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standard will be advantageous
